Before You Abort....

"Ok, I took a home pregnancy test and it is positive, now what?  This was not something I was planning for.  I am not ready for a baby right now!  I don't think I can do this.  I need to get an abortion."

Lots of women find themselves in this situation every day.  Many times, we panic and think getting an abortion as quickly as possible is the best option.

Before you have an abortion, you should consider getting a free ultrasound.  There are thousands of centers across the United States where you can get a FREE viability ultrasound.

Why would I want to get an ultrasound if I know I want to get an abortion?

A basic viability ultrasound exam will determine the following:
  • Confirm pregnancy
  • Detect fetal heart beat
  • Determine fetal age
  • Determine due date
  • Confirm whether the pregnancy is intrauterine
A second viability ultrasound can help to determine if the pregnancy is viable.  Since up to 30% of early term pregnancies end in miscarriage, it is good to know if the pregnancy is progressing.  If the pregnancy is not progressing, it will end in a natural miscarriage making abortion unnecessary

Confirming a pregnancy before paying an abortionist for an abortion is advisable.

Confirming that the pregnancy is "intrauterine" is VERY IMPORTANT prior to considering an abortion.  A tubal pregnancy can be very dangerous, even life-threatening.

Determining the fetal age is also imperative.  There are many methods of abortion depending on how far along the pregnancy is.  To make a good decision, you need the most accurate information possible.

You don't have to look at the screen when you get an ultrasound.  You can gather the information you need to know by contacting a center where you will be treated with care and respect.

If you are considering an abortion, call 1-888-956-HELP or text 1-760-567-9085 to find a center near you where you can get a FREE pregnancy test and a FREE ultrasound TODAY!

Baby's Amazing Journey

Some people think that my life began at birth; but my life's journey began long before I was born.......

6 week baby ultrasound
7 week baby ultrasound

Tiny fingers and toes develop.  Buds of the baby's milk teeth appear.  99% of the muscles are present, and brain activity is detectable.  The baby is around 13 mm (1/2 inch) in length.  The heart is beating and has been beating since 22 days after conception.  Arm and leg buds begin to grow.

8 week baby ultrasound

9 week baby ultrasound

The baby measures about 18 mm (3/4 inch) in length. His arms and legs are growing and location of the elbows and toes are visible.. Starts to practice moving (not felt by mom till week 20). The face is taking shape. Teeth begin to develop under the gums. The eyes can now be seen. The arms and legs continue to develop - these limbs are stretching out more and more. The heart has divided into the right and left chambers and is beating about 150 beats a minute which is about twice the rate of an adult.  The baby's facial features are visible, including a mouth and tongue. The eyes have a retina and lens. The major muscle system is developed, and the baby starts to practice moving. The baby has its own blood type.

10 week baby ultrasound

Baby is now the size of a strawberry. The body muscles are almost developed. Baby has begun movement. While still too small for you to feel, your little one is wriggling and shifting. The ears and nose can now be seen clearly. Fingerprints are already evident in the skin. Nipples and hair follicles begin to form.

11 week baby ultrasound

12 week baby ultrasound

The baby "practices" breathing and facial expressions, even smiling.  The baby can also urinate and stomach muscles can contract.  The baby is now 3 inches in length and weighs 2 oz. with fine hair on the face. The baby is able to swallow and feels and responds to skin stimulation.  Fingernails and toenails appear. The baby can suck his thumb, and gets hiccups!

14 week baby ultrasound
The baby is 3 and half inches (9cm) long. Weight is about 1 and half ounces (45 grams).  The eyes are slowly moving towards the center of the face. The nose is more pronounced.  The ears are fully developed. The cheekbones are visible. The first hair is appearing.

16 week baby ultrasound

Baby measures nearly 5 inches (12cm) from head to buttocks and weighs about 3.5 ounces (100 grams).  She covered with a protective soft down to regulate its temperature.  Fat begins to form underneath skin.  Baby hears external voices, sleeps and dreams.
Your baby has learned to breathe. This is apparent from the regular movements of his chest, inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid. These actions help the lungs to develop and grow. More developed facial muscles may lead to various expressions, such as squinting and frowning. The baby can grasp with his hands, kick, or even somersault!

18 week baby ultrasound

The baby is now 6 inches long and weighs 7 ounces.  Baby can hear sounds and may be startled by loud noises.  Recognizable active and rest periods.  Your baby may have the same awake and sleep patterns of a newborn.
20 week ultrasound
Baby now weighes about 11 ounces and is roughly 7 inches long.  Baby is 17cm long crown to rump, and weighs about 310 grams.  The baby can hear and recognize the mother's voice.  The mother will probably start feeling the first fetal movements.  The toenails and fingernails are growing.  The growth of hair on the rest of the body has started.  The skin is getting thicker.  The heart can now be heard with a stethoscope.

24 week ultrasound

The child is now gaining around 3 ounces (90 grams) a week. Baby weighs about 1.5 pounds and is 12 inches long. Baby weighs about 600 grams and is 30cm (crown to heel) long. The eyelids can be seen very clearly. If born at this stage, baby is considered "viable" and may be able to survive outside the womb.

Praying for Ursula

22 week ultrasound

Join me in praying for Ursula.  She is 22 weeks pregnant and seeking an abortion.  She feels unsupported, trapped and overwhelmed.  Pray the Lord would meet her where she is and that she would consider adoption of this precious baby.  This is a horrendous 3 day procedure called a D&X partial birth abortion she is contemplating.

Dealing with Disappointment

In life, disappointment and the hurt it causes is sometimes hard to handle. We often win but we also lose sometimes.  Whether it is at work, in our personal relationships or just a game, losing can be difficult.

Even though we are blessed with many "wins" (babies saved and lives changed), we have found it hard sometimes to "lose" in our Crisis Pregnancy Center ministry.  It is especially painful when the loss results in a hurting young woman and a dead baby.  We sometimes wonder why God would have sent a particular case to our center if the result was not going to be a "win"?  Of course, we are talking about OUR definition of a "win", not necessarily God's.  How can we presume to know the heart and mind of God?

We need to accept that God used us for His purpose at that moment and we may not know the reason or even the ultimate result or outcome.  We may be planting a seed along the way in someone's life which could result in a changed and/or saved life in the future.  We may never know the impact we have had in the lives of others until we are in heaven.

Our hearts, in their humanness, cry out to God over the destruction and loss we see day in and day out.  Sometimes we think if we had said or done something differently, it would have affected the outcome.  Not true!

If we prayerfully seek God each day and give Him the control, He will speak through us and use us for His purpose each day.

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Ephesians 2:10

Seeing God work in the lives of others is an honor and a privilege.  It is AMAZING to see lives saved and transformed!  We move on and move forward and anxiously await our next phone call or visit.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.  Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  Phillipians 4:8

"Planned Parenthood Credo"

Cecile Richards
President, PP
Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider, said on this the 2nd anniversary of the death of Dr. George Tiller, the infamous late term abortionist, "We have a credo at Planned Parenthood developed by the late Lynne Randall - which is that we each must strive to be "More Like George"".

Full article:
http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2011/05/23/each-must-strive-more-george

Seriously?
George Tiller, the notorious abortionist, who was one of only 3 abortionists nationwide who provided abortion after the 21st week of pregnancy?  Ms. Richards, these babies can live outside the womb!  Ms. Richards, have  you told women about your abortion procedure after 21 weeks?
21 Week Baby

Dilation and Extraction (D&X): (20 weeks to Full Term pregnancy)This medical procedure is also known as Partial-Birth Abortion. This  procedure takes three days. For two days, the cervix is dilated and medication is given for cramping. On the third day, the woman receives medication to start labor. The abortion doctor uses ultrasound to identify how the baby's body is facing in the womb. The doctor then positions the baby feet first, face down (breech position). The baby's body is then pulled out of the birth canal except for the head. Scissors are inserted into the base of the skull and an opening is  created. A suction catheter is inserted into the fetus' skull to remove its contents. The skull collapses and the fetus' head passes through the cervix where the baby is removed.

This is what Planned Parenthood calls "reproductive freedom"?
21 Week Baby

Father God, we lift up Ms. Richards to you and ask that you would change her heart and the hearts of those who would bring harm to the innocent.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.  Psalm 37:7

Mothers Pushing Daughters to Abort

It is a very disturbing trend.  Over the years, our youth have become more pro-life, but many mothers remain uninformed and swayed by the "it's my body" values of so many women in the 70s and 80s.  Most of these mothers grew up in the drugs, sex and rock and roll era where women were stepping into the workplace and proclaiming their freedom and power.

We have counseled thousands of young women over the years in crisis pregnancies.  These young women are in difficult situations as their pregnancy is unplanned.  They feel alone, scared and are feeling overwhelmed.  Taking the time to sit down and discuss their situation with someone who cares is exactly what they need to sort through their feelings, get help and resources and make a plan.  Equipping them with the information they need to know about ALL of their options is key.

Often a daughter comes with her mother seeking an abortion.  When talking with and counseling the daughter, most often she does NOT want an abortion.  It is her mother who is pressuring her to abort her baby.  Often the mothers are angry and hurt and feeling like the plans and dreams they had for their daughter are over.  Mothers feel like they are going to have to raise the baby and are not seeking answers, only a "quick fix".

Through the anger, we often see a mother in turmoil who herself  has unresolved guilt and hurt over a past abortion of her own.  If you ask her the question, "Have you had an abortion?", the floodgates open and the hurt and regret from her past that was laying just below the surface is released.   Loving and caring for the mothers of our young clients makes a difference.  Once mother takes the time to educate herself and think through the options with her daughter, she is more open and willing to support her daughter in making an adoption plan or parenting her soon to be grandchild.

Is Adoption an Option?

"I have to have an abortion.  I can't even consider adoption.  I can't handle the thought of my baby being out there somewhere."

Sounds a little irrational doesn't it?  It sounds unbelievable that someone would want to abort their baby rather than make an adoption plan, doesn't it?  Why do women abort their babies rather than make an adoption plan?  Are women that cold and callous?  What about the thousands and thousands of couples that can't have their own babies... wouldn't they want their baby to live and be raised in a loving home with a chance for a good life?

The truth is the statement "I can't handle the thought of my baby being out there somewhere" is very very common.  We hear it all the time at the pregnancy center.  Does this mean that mothers would rather have their babies dead?  Does this mean mothers are so selfish that they won't think of making an adoption plan?

No!!  The truth is that making a decision about an unplanned pregnancy is very very difficult.  I know that anytime I have made a decision quickly or under pressure, it has not usually been a good decision.  So often this is exactly what is going on with young women in crisis pregnancies.  There is sometimes pressure from the father or parents to "get rid of the problem".  Other reasons women consider abortion include financial concerns, other children, no money or job.  Very frequently, the mother is feeling overwhelmed or not feeling well (morning sickness).  One thing is common in most every case... the mother is not feeling supported and cared for.

Women also do not know much about adoption.  Click the link below for some information that might be helpful if you or someone you know is considering adoption:

Clearly, there is a lot to think about when you have an unplanned pregnancy.  The most important thing is.... Do not make a quick decision!  Find someone you can talk to about all the options... parenting, abortion and adoption.  To talk to someone confidentially, call 1-888-956-HELP to find a place where you can get the information you need in the area you live.

The Planned Parenthood "Spin Cycle"

It is really hard to read the "spin" in the news about and by Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country, and not share the truth that the media doesn't want us to know.

Planned Parenthood is mainly an abortion business with nearly 40% of their revenue coming from abortion.  They provided prenatal care to 7000 women, adoption referrals to only 977 women and performed 332,278 abortions in 2009 (most recent data available).

This means that 97.6% of pregnant women they saw, they performed an abortion on!  If you are paying taxes, you are paying for abortions!  If you find this to be objectionable, contact your local Senators and Representatives and encourage them do defund Planned Parenhood.

Click on the link below for more facts from Carenet:
The Planned Parenthood 'Spin Cycle'

Other things we can do to help women are to pray for an end to abortion, pray for the ministries that are helping women in crisis pregnancy situations, volunteer at your local crisis pregnancy center or pregnancy resource center or donate to your local pro-life pregnancy center.

Let's keep it real!  We need to be willing to speak out when the facts are misrepresented to women who are vunerable and don't have the support system they need.  Women need the truth and they need to know the choices, ALL THE CHOICES, when their lives and the lives of their babies are at stake.

Our Youth are Pro-Life

Our young people are pro-life and America is more pro-life than ever before. Why is this happening?  Young people are learning more about what abortion is and seeing how it has impacted their life or the life of their friends and loved ones.  They want to know all the facts.

They are learning the truth about the unborn.... baby's heart is beating just 20 days after conception..... baby has fingers and toes at 7 weeks.... baby is sucking her thumb at 9 weeks!  Young people are talking to people they know who have had abortions and learning the regret and hurt they carry with them.

10 week ultrasound
Education is key.  When abortion clinics tell our youth "it is nothing" or baby is only "products of conception" or "just a lump of cells", they are seeking answers.  It is easier than ever for young people to research and find information about baby's development and see ultrasounds that show baby's heart beating and development.

Even the liberal Washington Post wrote about the youth of America after attending a pro-life rally the writer thought would be "irrelevant".  Check this out...  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/23/AR2010012302400.html

Another group is gaining momentum on high school and college campuses all across the US called Students for Life of America.  Their stated goal is "to end abortion in our lifetime, and we plan to do that by identifying, educating, and activating this generation of young people."   For more information or to start a local group of your own check out http://studentsforlife.org/

The truth is very powerful.  Seeing is believing!

Why Blog?

I am a newbie in the "blog circuit".  I have started to blog a few times over the years but got sidetracked.  I didn't totally "get it".  Why do people blog?  Who wants to read their blogs?  Are there good reasons to blog?  Would I seem to be bloviating about something people don't really want to read?  I am not blogging about an easy issue. The issue of abortion is an issue that draws a lot of controversary as we have all seen in the headlines recently and really since 1973 when Roe vs. Wade made it legal to abort babies.

Then it occured to me!  People don't HAVE to read my blog unless they want to.  That is the GREAT thing about blogs!  On Facebook I have a variety of friends from a variety of places with a variety of opinions and beliefs.  I don't always agree with their views and they don't always agree with mine.  That doesn't make their impact in my life or our friendship or the history we have shared any less. We just have differing views based on where we have been, what our knowledge is of any particular subject, our values and our life experiences.  When we post on Facebook, our friends really have no choice when it comes to reading our comments.  It is hard to avoid others comments since they are in your feed.  A blog link gives us all a choice and we all need lots of choices right?  :)

Facebook is great for updating your daily status and keep in touch on how we are doing day to day.  I think when it comes to sharing our hearts, blogs provide a great platform.  People have a choice to click or not to click on a blog link.  That's the way it should be!

My blog is about life issues. Abortion breaks God's heart and it breaks mine.  I am not employed in "the industry".  I don't benefit financially in any way from my ministry to women.   I am a volunteer.  I think this gives me a different perspective.  I want to keep it real and relevant.  I don't like ranting but I have to admit I am tempted when I see false information and nonsense being sold to the American people.  Being real about what is happening everyday on the front lines where real people face real challenges and are looking for help and answers is what it is all about!  The issues are not simple and there is so much at stake!

SEX Time Bomb

One of the frightening things we see at our pregnancy center is young people having sex with multiple partners, in and out of relationships and "hookups".  The health of our young people is in real jeopardy and kids, in general, are unaware or in denial.

"That can't happen to me!  Other people get Herpes and HIV and Chlamydia or any of the over 50 sexually contracted diseases, right?"

"I have only had a few relationships and I know that I couldn't have an STD, right?"

"He told me he was never with anybody else and I believe him!"

Are you or will you be infected by an STD?  Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) are spreading like wildfire.  Even more scary... most STDs can be "silent", causing no noticeable symptoms.  These asymptomatic infections can be diagnosed only through testing.

                                                               FACTS:
    Herpes 1 Virus
  • Each year, one in four teens contracts an STD.
  • One in two sexually active persons will contract an STD by age 25.
  • The estimated number of people living in the US with a viral STD is over 65 million.  Every year, there are at least 19 million new cases of STDs, many of which are incurable.
  • Genital Herpes has infected 45million people ages 12 and older.  There is currently no cure for herpes.
"Simply put, condoms fail.  And condoms fail at a rate unacceptable for me as a physician to endorse them as a strategy to be promoted as meaningful AIDS protection."   Dr. Robert Renfield, chief of retro-viral research, Walter Reed Army Institute
"Saying the use of condoms is 'safe sex' is in fact playing Russian roulette.  A lot of people will die in this dangerous game."    Dr. Teresa Crenshaw, member of the U.S. Presidential AIDS Commission and past president of the American Association of Sex Educators

MYTH: If I've only been sexually active with one person, I can't get an STD.
FACT:  If that person has had any sexual contact with even one other person, you can get an STD.

MYTH: STDs are treatable and can always be seen or felt.
FACT:  Some STDs are treatable; however many are lifelong diseases, for which there is no cure.  Many STDs, for example Chlamydia, can cause a serious infection without you knowing, AND can be passed to another person.

MYTH:  If I use protection, I won't get an STD.
FACT: Even if a condom is used every single time you have sex, you still are at risk for contracting an STD.

MYTH: As long as I don't have sexual intercourse, I can't get an STD.
FACT: You can get STDs from oral sex or any sexual contact or even kissing (Herpes 1).

We have a new program at the Crisis Pregnancy Center called "NO REGRETS" to equip young men and women with the information they need to know!  If you questions or would like to speak to someone or get more information on our NO REGRETS program, referrals for testing or counseling, call LaNell 1-760-568-2200 or 1-888-956-HELP or email answers@choiceline.org  or text 1-760-567-9085.  All inquiries held in the strictest confidence.

Why do Women Abort their Babies?

"Why do women abort their babies?"  This is a very common question that perplexes those who have not faced a crisis pregnancy or known someone who has.  After counseling women in crisis pregnancies for 11 years, the best answer I can give you is  .... Women DO NOT want to abort their babies!!  They are not exercising their "choice".... not at all!!

Very often young women don't even think that they are carrying a baby... they are told by abortion providers that it is not a baby... it is "a lump of cells", "products of conception" or "blood and cells".  So if it isn't a baby then it is ok to just "terminate the pregnancy", right?  Many women are scared and need to be encouraged to get the information they need to know about all of their options and to not make a quick decision.  Often, when we are feeling overwhelmed or pressured, and especially when our bodies and hormones are changing, we do not make our best decisions.

Young women are not told that just 22 days after conception (before they know they are pregnant), the babies heart is beating.  At 6 weeks, brain waves can be measured.  At 8 weeks, the stomach, liver, kidneys and brain are functioning... fingerprints have formed. Sometimes abortion providers do an ultrasound to determine how far along the patient is in her pregnancy to decide which abortion method to use .... they turn the screen AWAY from the mother!

8 week ultrasound
I have witnessed hundreds of ultrasounds.  The baby's heartbeat can be seen and heard at about 6 weeks (4 weeks after conception).  By 7-8 weeks (5-6 weeks after conception), we can easily see fingers and toes and even facial features are visible.  Baby is moving about freely and even trying to do somersaults!

Thousands of women in crisis pregnancies have come to our pregnancy center seeking help and often seeking an abortion.  Most often what they really need is someone to talk to, someone to listen, someone to help them who cares about them.  The reasons are numerous; financial hardship, pressure from the boyfriend, pressure from the parents or being alone and feeling nobody cares.  Most of the reasons are temporary problems and challenges.  Finances can get better, relationships change, people grow, resources are available to help with material needs and education.... there is a lot of help available.

Occasionally there is a health issue or concern or the baby has come to be through a rape.  These are very very rare circumstances and agreeably difficult ones.  The baby is the innocent.  God is the Author and Giver of Life.   These are very difficult circumstances where parents especially need counseling and support.

Once an abortion decision is made and carried out, most women feel regret and even more serious emotional problems, hurt and nightmares that stay with them for many many years.... abortion is final.

Hundreds of women we have counseled have shared their deep regrets over choosing abortion previously.  Never, not once in 11 years, has a woman who chose to give her baby life... whether she chose parenting or made an adoption plan.... said that she regretted her decision to give life to her child.  Not once!

No baby is a mistake, no matter the circumstances, no matter the situation.  God has a plan and a purpose for every life.

For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.  Plans for good and not evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Jeremiah 29:11

Tell the Truth!!!

So much in the news the last several weeks about Planned Parenthood and the effort to defund them in Congress (which I support).  Planned Parenthood has responded by trying to convince people that abortion is just a teeny tiny whiny bit of their total business, and that without them, women would not have anywhere to go for their family planning needs. Not true!  There are over 7000 federally qualified health centers across the United States that can and do care for women in need.

Here is a link to the facts..... Planned Parenthood aborts over 330,000 babies a year just in the United States and makes HUGE profits because of this.... abortion is the "bread and butter" of their business.  Our tax dollars are paying for this.  Check out the info:

Planned Parenthood President Misleads on Its Own Abortion Stats | LifeNews.com

I think most parents would be surprised to see and hear how Planned Parenthood is "encouraging and supporting" our children.  They have representatives visiting our children's health classes "educating" them about how to "feel good" about their bodies.  Check out their teen website....   http://www.plannedparenthood.org/info-for-teens/index.asp  If you take the time to check out their website and some of the videos they have provided our children, I think you might be a little surprised.  Whatever feels good.... anything goes, anytime, any age!  Why not!!??  Pretty scary really.

A Day that Changed my Life

12 Weeks
When I was in my early twenties, I suspected I was pregnant but didn't go to the doctor.  I was in denial and had put it out of my mind thinking.... well, I wasn't really thinking.. I pretended it wasn't so.  One night I started having severe cramping and ended up in the emergency room.  The doctor told me I was pregnant and that I was having a miscarriage.  It was a very traumatic experience.
There was a very kind nurse taking care of me that night who calmed my spirit as she stroked my hair and held my hand.  I wasn't a Christian at the time. In reflection, I bet she was.  I will never forget what happened after I lost my baby.  This kind nurse cradled my little 12 week old baby in her hands and stood next to my bed.  She showed me my baby... it was very small .... in a very soft voice, she gently pointed out the babies arms and legs and facial features to me.  It is hard to explain my feelings... I was exhausted, hurting and yet mesmerized by my tiny little baby.  I wept quietly as I was admitted to the hospital that night.  I have often thought of this nurse and how she impacted my life without even knowing it.  I think I will meet her one day in heaven and share with her how her kindness and care impacted my life.

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love"  Ephesians 4:2

Here We Go!!

One of my biggest regrets since I started serving in ministry is that I haven't documented very much personally.  There have been so many blessings, so many miracles and so many lessons learned over these 11 years.  I decided to start a blog so that I can share what God is doing in my life with my friends.  I have family and friends from the East Coast to the Midwest to the West Coast and it is always a challenge "staying in touch".   I have friends that share my views and friends that don't share my views.  I have friends that are Christians and friends that are not.  Hopefully this will be a forum to share and learn from each other!
I have been the Director at the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Palm Desert, CA for the past 11 years.  I am also a small group leader in Women's Ministries at Southwest Community Church. My background is in business administration and marketing where I worked for over 20 years before I quit my job to serve in ministry.  I am married for almost 14 years to my husband Gary who has worked at Merrill Lynch for the past 35 years.  He has been my partner in ministry since the inception of the CPC... always there to lend support in any way.   We have two sons... Paul is 27 and Christopher is 23.  Both of our "boys" are grown and we are empty nesters along with our adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel "Bandit".
