Drinking During Pregnancy

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition that results from alcohol exposure during pregnancy. Problems that may be caused by fetal alcohol syndrome include physical deformities, mental retardation, learning disorders, vision difficulties and behavioral problems.

The problems caused by fetal alcohol syndrome vary from child to child, but defects caused by fetal alcohol syndrome are irreversible.  There is no amount of alcohol that's known to be safe to consume during pregnancy. If you drink during pregnancy, you place your baby at risk of fetal alcohol syndrome.

If you suspect your child has fetal alcohol syndrome, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Early diagnosis may reduce the risk of problems, including learning difficulties and substance abuse.

Dancing Baby Ultrasound

It may seem that this ultrasound is "novel" because the baby is dancing around in the womb.  I have seen hundreds of ultrasounds and we see this all the time!  We see and hear the baby's heartbeat as early as 5-6 weeks (3-4 weeks after conception)!  His heart has actually been beating since about 22 days after conception! Mom is just finding out she is pregnant at about this time.

By 7 weeks, baby is moving around.  By 8 weeks, we can clearly see fingers, toes and lots of acrobatics!!

Window to the Womb at 6 weeks

Baby's Growth and Development at 6 Weeks Pregnant

6 weeks

Ultrasound is such an amazing gift!  Technology has come so far that we can actually see the our baby and hear her heartbeat as early as 5-6 weeks.

During your 6th week of pregnancy (just 4 weeks after conception), your baby grows at a phenomenal rate and his systems develop significantly. Here's what's happening at 6 weeks pregnant:

  • Your baby is clearly visible on ultrasound
  • When you're 6 weeks pregnant, his nervous system and all major body organs — heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs — are the first to form.
  • Facial features — jaw, cheeks, chin, ear canals, nose, and eyes — begin to develop around the 6th week of pregnancy.
  • You baby's heart beats about 80 times per minute and gets faster each day.
